Muay Thai is a Thai Martial art known as an art of Eight Limbs with various clinching techniques. The eight limbs are Kicks, Punches, Elbows and knees of both hands and legs. So it becomes 8. Actually there is a 9th limb too which is head attack but not used in rings because Muay Thai is a sport based Martial arts. The street vesions of Muay Thai are Muay Chaiya and Muya Boran.


Muay Thai is believed to be associated with Martial arts of Lord Hanuman. He is said to be the originator of Thai Martial arts.


Following weapons are used in Muay Thai.


  • Punching- Jab, Cross, Hook, Swing, Spinning Back Fist, Upper Cut and Cobra Punch.

  • Kicking- Straight Kick, Roundhouse Kick, Diagonal Kick, Half Shin- Half Knee Kick, Reverse Roundhouse Kick, Down Roundhouse Kick, Axe Heel Kick,      Jump Kick,        Step Up Kick and Various Foot Thrust techniques

  • Elbow Strikes- Elbow Slash, Horizontal Elbow, Uppercut, Forward Elbow Thrust, Reverse Horizontal Elbow, Spinning Elbow, Double Elbow Chop, Mid-        Air        Elbow Strike.

  • Knee Strikes- Straight Knee, Diagonal Knee, Curve Knee, Horizontal Knee, Knee Slap, Knee Bomb, Flying Knee, Step- Up Knee Strikes


Clinch and Neck Wrestling:


In Western boxing the two fighters are separated when they clinch. But in Muay Thai, they are not. It is often in the clinch where knee and elbow techniques are used. To strike and bind the opponent for both offensive and defensive purposes, small amounts of stand-up grappling are used in the clinch.
